About the Society

FICEDULA was founded in 1981 after the Society for the Study and Protection of Birds of Lugano was dissolved (1931-1979).
The Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) bread in Switzerland only in the regions where Italian is spoken.
Its population is reduced and threatened (at present fewer than 30 pairs). For this reason it was taken on as symbol of our Society.


To promote and sustain the research on birds in Southern Switzerland and contribute to the conservation of their population and habitats.

Various books of FICEDULA are deposited with many journals and magazines received in exchange at the Biblioteca Cantonale in Mendrisio (naturalistic section) [via Agostino Maspoli, CH-6850 Mendrisio].

Protected Areas

In 1995 FICEDULA and OGZ (Zürich) set up a foundation with the aim of acquiring habitats of important interest for birds.
The area of Dötra (Blenio Valley), 50 ha of alpine meadows was preserved from the threat of tourist settlement.
Financial support of the foundation and the Society are welcome on the Swiss postal account : ccp 65 279 5, in the name of FICEDULA.
